原生质体电融合酵母多倍体生理特性的研究

对原生质体电融合技术获得的11株酵母多倍体融合株,进行了一系列生理特性的分析比较．结果发现,在电融合过程中,融合株的细胞体积及DNA含量并不随着核倍性呈线性递增．而是有其特殊的变化规律。当糖化酵母sta1、sta2和sta3在细胞核中各自纯合时,明显表现出表达的剂量效应。其中sta1、sta2纯合的融合株．在YEPS培养中,GA分泌可被淀粉大量诱导,表现出一定的二次生长特性。从分析结果推测,在亲株5301-14D及HU-TY—1A中可能有对GA分泌不利的因素。     

Extra-pair mating,male plumage coloration and sexual selection in yellow warblers (Dendroica petechia)

Extra-pair mating has been proposed as a source of sexual selection responsible for secondary sexual traits that are common among socially monogamous birds, although supporting evidence is scant. In the socially monogamous yellow warbler, males are larger than females, and unlike females, have extensive reddish streaking on their breasts. Using DNA fingerprinting we show that within-pair parentage was positively related to male size, and that extra-pair mating success was positively related to the amount of streaking on the breast. To our knowledge, this is the first intraspecific evidence of an association between a male plumage ornament and gains of extra-pair paternity that is apparently independent of age. This study confirms that extra-pair mating can be an important mechanism of sexual selection even when the most successful sires are commonly cuckolded, and refutes a previous hypothesis that the variation in plumage and behaviour among male yellow warblers is an example of alternative, equally successful, evolutionarily stable strategies (ESS). More generally, the demonstrated independence of within-pair and extra-pair success and their associated traits indicates that where animals have multiple secondary sexual traits, different traits may be selected by different mechanisms that contribute to total reproductive success.     

异色芋生物学特性观察

本文对观赏植物异色芋（ＣｏｌｏｃａｓｉａｈｅｔｅｒｏｃｈｒｏｍａＨ．ＬｉｅｔＺ．Ｘ．Ｗｅｉ）在昆明栽培环境下的生物学特性进行总结,为商品化栽培异色芋提供了理论依据,为其分类也提供了一定的有益补充。结果表明：一年生植株不开花,根茎也不产生分枝;二年生植株开花率为７３．６％,根茎平均分枝３．６条。异色芋３月上旬开始萌动,７月中旬抽花梗,８月上旬开花,１１月份地上部分枯萎,因此在昆明异色芋生育期约２６０ｄ。

Mapping and characterization of mangrove plant communities in Hong Kong

Ecological surveys were carried out to investigate the distribution and characterization of remaining mangrove stands in Hong Kong. The field studies indicate that 43 mangrove stands, excluding Mai Po Nature Reserve, still remained along the coastline of Hong Kong despite tremendous reclamation and development which occurred in the past 40 years. Most mangrove stands were found in Deep Bay (western part)and Sai Kung District (eastern coasts). The total areas occupied by these mangrove stands were 178 ha,varying from a very small stand (with 1–2 mangrove shrubs) to fairly extensive mangroves in Deep Bay (> 10 ha). It appeared that mangrove stands located in Deep Bay area were larger than those in the eastern coasts. Twenty plant species were identified from these stands, with 13 being exclusive or associate mangrove species. The major constituent species were Kandelia candel, Aegiceras corniculatum, Excoecaria agallocha and Avicennia marina. Rare species such as Heritiera littoralis were only found in a few mangrove stands. Out of the 43remaining mangrove stands, 23 were more worthwhile for conservation and their plant community structures were further investigated by transect and quadrat analyses. The importance values (sum of relative abundance,frequency and dominance) show that K. candel was the most dominant species. Species richness and Simpson's indices together with tree height, tree density and canopy area fluctuated significantly between mangrove stands. These values were used to prioritize the conservation potential of the remaining mangrove stands in Hong Kong. Physical effects of negative air ions in a wet sauna

 The physical effects of negative air ions on humans were determined in an experimental sauna room equipped with an ionizer. Thirteen healthy persons took a wet sauna bath (dry bulb temperature 42° C, relative humidity 100%, 10 min exposure) with or without negative air ions. The subjects were not told when they were being exposed to negative air ions. There were no differences in the moods of these persons or changes in their blood pressures between the two saunas. The surface temperatures of the foreheads, hands, and legs in the sauna with negative ions were significantly higher than those in the sauna without ions. The pulse rates and sweat produced in the sauna with ions were singificantly higher than those in the sauna without ions. The results suggest that negative ions may amplify the effects on humans of the sauna. Received: 31 March 1995 / Revised: 25 July 1995 / Accepted: 26 July 1996     

Methanogenic granular sludge formation in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactir treating synthetic methanolic waste

A laboratory upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor, seeded with fine, suspended, bacterial floc with 1.76 g volatile suspended solids/l, was used to treat synthetic methanolic waste. After 180 days of continuous peration, granular sludge with discrete granules of 1 to 2 mm diam. was formed, with 52 g volatile suspended solids/l. Granules were brown, relatively soft and had a settling velocity of 1.61 cm/s. Extracellular polymeric matter extracted from the granular sludge had high carbohydrate content but low nucleic acid content. The ash of the granular sludge contained Na⁺, K⁺ and Mg²⁺ up to 15.0, 11.7 and 3.75 mg/g, respectively. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the granular sludge was dominated by methanogens resembling Methanosarcina.The authors are with the Department of Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Osaka University, 2-1 Yamadaoka, Suita, Osaka 565, Japan

Semen characteristics of Muturu Bulls--Bos brachyceros

Six mature Muturu Bulls were elecroejaculated once a week for nine weeks to study their semen quality and ejaculate characteristics. The semen volume was 1.8 ml +/- 0.1, the sperm concentration 2.16 x 10(8)/ml +/- 0.29, and the progressive sperm motility 36.2% +/- 2.6. Morphologically normal sperm averaged 70.0% +/- 3.1, primary abnormalities 13.4% +/- 1.0 and secondary abnormalities 15.1% +/- 2.3. Except in one bull, no measurable levels of fructose were observed. The contents of major cations and chloride ions in whole semen and seminal plasma were also determined.     

Reproductive performance, population dynamics and anthropometrics of the free-ranging Cayo Santiago rhesus macaques

This report summarizes demographic data collected on the Cayo Santiago colony of rhesus monkeys from 1976-1983 and compares the results with those from 1959-1964 [8,9]. For males and nonpregnant/nonlactating, pregnant, and lactating females mean (+/- 1 SD), body weights, crown-rump lengths, and ponderal indices are tabulated for each age on a large (n = 586) single sampling of this free-ranging population of macaques.
